What Purpose do Veins Serve?

March 21st, 2011

If you’ve looked into vein treatment, it is clear that you are familiar with the things that can go wrong with veins, but do you know what purpose they serve in your body? Veins play a number of different roles that are essential to your very existence.

Veins Regulate Blood Flow To and From the Organs

Veins serve a number of purposes in the body, such as:

  • Blood is returned through the veins to the heart after it has made its way through the organs. This blood contains carbon dioxide and other waste once it has been used.
  • As the blood is returned to the heart, the carbon dioxide is released. Oxygen then makes its way back into the blood to be distributed to the organs again.
  • Inactive blood in the body is stored in the veins during resting periods
  • Large veins have a specific purpose. They reside in the center of the body and they channel blood collected from smaller veins into the heart.
  • The farther veins are from the center of the body, the smaller they are. Veins that are closer to the skin’s surface are superficial veins. They are connected to deeper veins with perforating veins.

When suffering from varicose veins and spider veins, it becomes easy to focus on the inconveniences that veins pose rather than recognizing the integral role they also play.

How To Get Your Legs Ready for Spring Fashion

March 13th, 2011

The warmer weather is fast approaching for those that have experienced cold climates during the winter months, and that means it’s almost time for them to finally start baring some skin! If you’ve already received treatment for your varicose veins or spider veins, we have some tips to help you show off those gorgeous gams in the best way possible.

  • Exfoliate - dry skin can make you look older, even when it’s on your legs. Start using a body wash with a built-in exfoliator, or a separate tool to remove dead skin cells and make the skin on your legs look radiant. Even if you still have veins present prior to receiving treatment, nice skin will detract from the look of them.
  • Moisturize – this will help prevent dry skin and have the benefits as mentioned above, and if you choose specific lotions, you’ll take your look that much further. Body lotions with a touch of shimmer add a youthful look or consider a moisturizer that contains sunless tanner.
  • Tone up - this tip is for those that already spend a lot of time at the gym. Consider increasing your leg workouts for more defined calves and thighs.
  • Be confidentno one is perfect, act confidently and dare to wear short-shorts and bathing suits this summer, and your confidence will make you look even better!

If you haven’t booked a procedure to take care of the veins in your legs, there’s no time like the present with warm weather on its way!

What Causes Wrinkles?

March 6th, 2011

If you’re considering Botox or another filler due to the presence of wrinkles, it’s important to recognize that there are some causes that are preventable. While age does play a role in the development of wrinkles on the skin, there are other factors that can contribute to facial aesthetics that make you appear older than you’d like. While your existing wrinkles can be treated with fillers, by understanding the following causes, you can prevent the development of future problems:

  • Facial muscle contractions - as you smile, squint or frown, your facial muscles contract, causing wrinkles. Facial expressions are completely natural, but you can prevent wrinkles by being more conscious of your expressions.
  • Sun – the sun can age the skin in many different ways if you do not properly protect it. Ensure you use a facial lotion with SPF at all times and use a hat or cover when you’re outside for long periods of time.
  • Smoking – smoking breaks down collagen in the skin, which causes it to lose its elasticity and causes wrinkles to form.

For more information on the treatment of existing wrinkles, come in for a consultation and we can discuss the fillers available to you.

Hiding Your Varicose Veins

February 22nd, 2011

For many individuals, the decision to have varicose veins treated is due to aesthetics. Women in particular are self-conscious about having large, colorful veins on their legs visible when they’re wearing a swimsuit or a pretty dress; veins just aren’t a desirable accessory.  The good news is that up until the point that you choose to go under the knife to have your varicose or spider veins treated, there are some ways that you can hide them.

Disguising Your Varicose Veins

1. Wear pantyhose or tights – this winter, dark colored tights, pantyhose and leggings are considered trendy, so pair a skirt or dress for a night out with a pair so you don’t feel your veins are stealing the show.

2. Use concealer and a cream - use a vein cream as a moisturizing base and then apply a concealer. You can have a makeup consultant mix you a color that best matches your skin tone and use a makeup sponge to dab it over the veins. If you intend on hitting the beach, you can pick up a waterproof vein cream that will conceal and stay in place!

3. Be confident - if you’re wearing a dress and constantly pulling down the hemline to try and cover your veins, you’re going to draw more undesired attention to your legs. Act confident, try not to think about the presence of your veins and there’s a strong likelihood no one will even notice.

Once you’re ready to permanently hide your veins, contact us to arrange a consultation on your vein treatment options.

Exercises to Prevent Spider Veins

February 14th, 2011

As poor circulation contributes to spider veins and varicose veins that often surface in the legs, maintaining movement can be an important component in preventing their onset. The following exercises will not guarantee that you will never suffer from enlarged veins, but they can prevent the quantity and frequency in which they appear. If you have a job where you are sedentary, these exercises are of even greater importance:

  1. Calf raises - use a stair or low bench for this activity.  You begin calf raises by standing on the step, then you raise your body up on your toes and lower your heels down below the step. You’ll feel a big stretch through the back of your calf area if you’re completing this exercise correctly.  It’s recommended that you complete 30-50 repetitions.
  2. Rock your feet – while sitting down, tilt your ankle so your toes reach the floor and then tilt in backwards so your heel touches the ground. This activity will improve circulation to the area and should be completed a few times a day.
  3. Walk on your tip-toes - embrace your inner dancer and raise yourself up onto your toes as you go about your daily activities for a nice stretch through your calves and ankles.
  4. Walk on your heels – this activity requires a bit more coordination than walking on your tip-toes, but offers the same benefits.

By incorporating the above exercises into your daily routine, you’ll encourage proper blood flow in the legs which is beneficial to vein health. These techniques may help reduce the onset of spider veins, but will not offer benefits if they’ve already formed. Please contact us to discuss treatment options for varicose veins, or learn about other essential prevention techniques.

Scientists Discover Method to Grow Human Veins

February 6th, 2011

Proving that medicine is limitless, it’s recently been reported that scientists have discovered a way to grow bio-enginered veins which could greatly improve the effectiveness of bypass surgeries and kidney dialysis. Currently the process is to harvest the veins of a patient, which has a risk of complications. The new procedure can ensure that the veins are prepared ahead of time so that they are ready for use when needed.

According to the Science Transitional Medicine Journal cells from human cadavers will be used and grafted to polyglycolic acid for 8-10 weeks as they grow.  The veins can then be preserved in a saline solution so that they are stored until required.  It’s believed that there will be no complications resulting from procedures with the manufactured veins and that they should not be rejected by the immune system.

Human trials to test the effectiveness of these veins is set to begin shortly in the United States, but doctors behind this new medical innovation are expecting positive results.

Vitamins to Improve Vein Health

February 1st, 2011

While vitamins do not necessarily offer a solution to vein problems like varicose veins and eliminate the need for other treatment, they can improve overall vein health and provide health benefits to the body in general. Ensure that the following vitamins are incorporated into your daily regimen through proper nutrition or use of supplements (if your doctor deems these appropriate with your other medications)!

  • Vitamin C and Vitamin E – both of these vitamins improve blood circulation and this can also strengthen the walls of the veins
  • Vitamin P – this is a vitamin that few have heard of, but it is a powerful antioxidant that is in the skins of fruits like grapes, berries and apples. Any antioxidants can be beneficial to vein health
  • Magnesium and CoQ10 – these vitamins can increase circulation which is essential for the prevention or improvement of varicose veins
  • Fish oil and Omega-3s – according to the American Heart Association, these are supplements that can greatly improve circulation in the body as well

Use of vitamins will not replace treatment for varicose veins, but it can help prevent problems and improve them to some degree once they’re already present in a multi-disciplined approach. Contact us for medical advice on vein treatment.

When is the Right Time to Get Botox?

January 24th, 2011

Botox has been a hot topic in the media recently as more young people seem to be getting treatment as a preventative measure to ensure their faces don’t show signs of aging. Sometimes Botox patients are as young as their early 20s, and this is a cause of heavy debate.

The answer that everyone’s looking for is when is the right time to get Botox? Is 20 too young? Well, as the media continues to debate this, there truly is no right or wrong answer, as a doctor will evaluate the need on a case by case basis. Typically, a Botox consultation involves looking at where wrinkles are forming or where they may form in the future. Then it can be determined if Botox can either slow the development of the signs of aging or if there will be immediate improvement with injectibles.

In some circumstances people in their 20s will benefit from getting Botox, as facial characteristics and not necessarily age, determine where lines and wrinkles may begin to form and appear more prominent in the future. In other cases, people in their 20s will not experience major changes as a result of the Botox. As it stands today with no firm answer, this is an issue that will continue to be debated.

For a consultation to determine if it’s the right time for you to get Botox, please visit our website and contact us.

Recovering from Vein Surgery: Compression Stockings

January 18th, 2011

Following varicose vein surgery or sclerotherapy, it’s regularly suggested that patients use compression stockings in order to aid in their recovery. Compression stockings may not be the most comfortable or aesthetically appealing, so this leads some to wonder just how necessary it is that they are used. Here are some important facts about compression stockings during recovery from vein surgery:

  • They’re typically used for up to 3 weeks following surgery
  • Sclerotherapy involves injecting the veins, and using compression can help prevent them from reopening which speeds up healing
  • For the first few days, it’s usually recommended that the stockings are worn around the clock, and are only to be removed for bathing
  • After the first 3-4 days have elapsed, stockings can most often be removed at night but should be worn during the day
  • Use of compression stockings is said to prevent bruising
  • Wearing compression stockings can better allow patients to start exercising again since it can prevent the veins from reopening during activity
  • Compression stockings can also be suggested as an initial treatment option when varicose veins appear
